Abstract
Background COVID-19 pandemic hinders the public health campaigns against tobacco and e-cigarette
smoking in teenagers. Since face-to-face programs in schools and communities are still deemed unsafe, the
internet and social media can be powerful tools to deliver these programs. To our knowledge, no programs
have been published to address this in Indonesia. Objective To deliver the Social Mastery and Resilience
Training against Tobacco and E-Cigarette Using E-Learning and Social Media (SMART TEENS) Project,
a 3-week evidence-based, online anti-smoking program for teenagers >15 years old. Methods The program
includes education about a.) the socio-biological effects of smoking and vaping, b.) stress coping strategies,
and c.) how to resist pro-smoking peer pressure and advertisement. We invite the participants to a WhatsApp
group. We have prepared 17 TikTok-format short videos. We send one of these daily and discuss each of them
with the participants through the group chat. Professional designers-animators and a social media expert
were hired in creating these contents. We also organize competitions to create anti-smoking pantun and
memes, both with money prize. Lastly, we conduct four 90-minute Zoom interactive discussions weekly,
with 10–12 teenagers facilitated by one doctor. Conclusion We are currently conducting a feasibility study
with 38 participants in Kota Metro, Lampung. If results are favorable, we are planning to conduct a school-
based, randomized controlled trial in 6 high schools with 500 participants. As the first evidence-based,
comprehensive, online anti-smoking program in Indonesia, we hope that the SMART TEENS Project offer
a promising strategy to protect Indonesian adolescents from the dangers smoking.

Abstract
Background Adolescence is an important period of growth and development before reaching the adult stage.
Iron deficiency anemia/IDA leads to decreased overall performance and productivity especially in adolescents.
Many quality of life studies but still rare, link anemia in adolescents. Objective To determine association
between IDA and quality of life in adolescents. Methods This cross-sectional analytical study was conducted
in Semarang in May-August 2020. Adolescents aged 13-16 years were recruited. IDA was determined by
history, physical examination and laboratory tests using the following criteria: Hb levels: females : <12 g/
dL, males : <13 g/dL, Serum Iron: <40 g/dL 3, TIBC : >410 g/dL and Erythrocyte morphology: microcytic
hypochromic. Quality of life was measured using the PedsQL Generic Core Scale 4.0 questionnaire.
Results There were 120 children aged 13-16 years recruited for this study but 10 subjects with major
depression, and anxiety dropped out. The percentage of boys and girls was 25,8% and 74.2% respectively.
IDA was diagnosed in 10,9% of the respondents and 19.1% had low Hb level. From the QL test, 24.5%
were found to have poor quality of life. Among the subjects who had IDA, 4 out of 12 (33.3%) had poor
quality of life compared to the subjects without IDA 23:98 (23.4%) but not statistically significant. There
was a significant association between IDA and adolescent physical function but not with other functions
and overall quality of life. Conclusion There was no association between IDA and quality of life but had
association with physical function in adolescents.
