An Update to Approach to the Common Childhood Electroclinical Syndromes

Abstract
Background Childhood Electroclinical Syndrome (CES) is a term that refers to distinct epilepsies of childhood
which have particular similarities such as the age of onset, seizure semiology, EEG, and prognosis. Objective
To present the core features of CES for diagnosing and managing some common CES. Results Childhood
Electroclinical Syndrome may organize by the age of onset: neonatal, infantile, childhood, or adolescent.
The assignment of a syndrome has specific implications for diagnosis, management, and prognostication.
With advancements in diagnostics and genetics, pediatric epilepsy is entering the age of precision medicine.
Conclusion This paper presents a simplified practical diagnostic and therapeutic algorithm for some of the
common CES.
