           Competency Fulfillment Assessment and Evaluation

           Abdul Latief
           Indonesian College of Pediatrics
           Abstract
Background Covid-19 pandemic had disrupted almost all pediatric training program. Considering this
circumstances, in order to fulfill competency assessment, Indonesian Coleague of Pediatric adapted the
evaluation system for continuing competency assessment during Covid-19 pandemic. Objective To review the
competency evaluation system and to evaluate the participant response to competency assessment system during
Covid-19 pandemic. Methods This review was made survey among 150 partcipants of competency assessment
in 2020 until 2021. Results Competence-based assessment in medicine is the assessment of a person’s abilities
to use (apply) their knowledge, skills and attitudes in daily practice to improve the health of individual patient
and community. Competencies that must be assessed are summarized in the Indonesian National Standard for
Pediatrician Education (2018). To evaluate this competence, appropriate tools are needed based on the level of
each student (starting from oral test, OSCE and direct observation such as WPBA, MSF). During this pandemic,
one of the changes made to assess and evaluate students is by carrying out On-line KIKAI Centralized National
Evaluation, either via fully online or hybrid. In response to the implementation of online competency assessment
most of participants agree with this method (81%), dis-agree (9%), doubtfull (10%). 74% no-difficulties during
during answering OSCE respons questions and 71% no-difficulties answering OSCE prosedures. There are many
participants have internet network connection problems (39%). Conclusion Despite the ongoing pandemic,
assessment and evaluation of pediatrics competencies are still being carried out. There are not many obstacles
encountered during the competency assessment/evaluation process. Readiness/availability of online facilities is
one of the obstacles that need to be considered for the smooth process of competency assessment/evaluation.

           Curriculum Implementation during Covid-19

           Bambang Tridjaja
Department of Child Health, Faculty of Medicine Universitas Indonesia-Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, Jakarta, Indonesia

           Abstract
Background Pediatric residency programs must respond to the effect of Covid-19 pandemic because as physicians
and trainees, residents must balance between developing their knowledge, skills, and attitude as pediatricians within
a deadly respiratory illness pandemic environment. Methods Narrative review of selected publication. Results
Learning outcome should be vigorously and meticulously considered with cautioned implementation to maintain
desired competency outcome according to the level of resident stage of development. Undoubtedly, a large and
indispensable portion of pediatric resident learning takes place as patient encounter (inpatient or outpatient,
emergency room) dan various clinical procedures, but in doing so with the current health care environment
means safety precautions policy should be mandatory. Direct and indirect supervision cannot be performed ideally
but should not be discounted. A competency-based outcome training program depends heavily on continuous
formative (supervision!) assessments while summative assessments should be based upon multiple parameters. For
the educational component such as case presentation, grand rounds sessions, morning report, death conference,
journal reading, case-based discussion, can be moved online. Teaching technologies such as synchronous/
asynchronous/ flipped classroom are examples for preserving resident knowledge acquisition. However, field research
and community work are the most affected during Covid-19 pandemic. Options could be retrospective research
from hospital medical records or online surveys. Community work must accommodate social media to reach the
community. Surge in Covid-19 patients would change curriculum implementation for a certain period and resident
safety and well being will be a decisive factor for competency achievements. Conclusions Residency programs are
adjusting curriculum implementation to embrace new norms while surrounded by uncertainty. Curriculum as the
sole guidance for achieving competency need to be implemented more innovatively.
